Crispy deep-fried cheese
Does the thought of the rich buttery taste of slightly melted cheese in a crispy breadcrumb crust make your mouth water? Instead of resorting to the frozen section, it is almost as quick and easy to prepare deep-fried cheese yourself. Making it in your home kitchen will be fun and it will taste much better.
- 500 g Zelene Doline cheese (Zelene Doline Edam or Zelene Doline Gouda)
- 3 large eggs
- 200 g breadcrumbs
- 100 g plain flour
- deep-frying oil
The following can be served on the side:
- Zelene Doline sour cream,
- cold yogurt sauce,
- cranberry sauce, or
- tomato salsa.
Cut the cheese into slices at least half a centimetre thick. Beat two eggs and prepare 3 deep plates for the breading ingredients. Put the flour on the first plate, the beaten eggs on the second and the breadcrumbs on the third.
Coat each slice of cheese on all sides, first in the flour, then in the beaten eggs and finally in the breadcrumbs. Remember to also coat the sides of the cheese slices. The cheese should be sealed with coating on all sides to keep the melted cheese from leaking out while frying.
Heat the oil in a frying pan on the stove. Fry the cheese until golden brown on both sides (approximately five minutes on each side). Drain the fried cheese of excess oil. This is best done using a frying basket or strainer. You can also use paper towels. However, be careful – if the fried crust is cracked, the cheese slices will stick to the towels.
On the side, you can serve herbal sour cream, cold yogurt sauce, cranberry sauce or tomato salsa on a leaf of lettuce. If you really can’t resist, you can also indulge in some classic tartare sauce and potato chips. Garnish with sprigs of parsley or slices of red bell pepper.
